Apparition .  The image of a spirit.  It can be a full body or partial.  This is the most common thing to spring to mind when someone speaks of seeking a ghost.

Apport.  When a solid object appears from nowhere.

Astral Plan.  Where spirits are said to reside.

Aura.  A field that is said to surround all living things.

Automatic writing.  A spirit takes control of a persons hand and writes.

Bi-location.  Being in two places at the same time.

Channelling.  A type of possession, usually with the permission of the medium.

Clairaudience. The ability to hear the voices of spirit.

Clairvoyance. Ability to see spirit

Clairsentience. The ability to feel spirit.

Cold reading.  When a medium has no prior knowledge of their client.

Cold spot.  An area of cooler air where the temperature has dropped without explanation.  This is believed to indicate the presence of spirit.

Dowsing.  The use of rods or pendulums to make contact with spirit.  Can also be used to find lost objects and water.

Ectoplasm.  This is a controversial phenomenon as, in the past, people have faked ectoplasm with great effect

Electro magnetic field (EMF). Detects distortion in natural electro magnetic field.  This is an instrument used in paranormal research as it is believed the fluctuation in the field can occur when there is a spirit present.

Extra sensory perception (ESP) -  sometimes know as a sixth sense.

Electric voice phenomenon (EVP).   The capture of spirit voice/noise on a recording device

Exorcism.  The expulsion of a spirit from a house or person.

Exorcist.  One who conducts an exorcism .

Ghost.  An apparition that can be seen as a shadow, a full apparition, heard or sometime manifest as an odour.

Ghost Hunt.  To hunt for ghosts of course!

Ghost Hunter.  The person that does it!

Haunting/Haunted.   The repeated presence of unexplained/paranormal activity attributed to spirit.

Malevolent spirit.  An angry spirit which causes fear, distress.

Medium.  A person who can communicate with spirit

Orbs.  Ball shaped light anomalies usually caught on camera and occasionally seen with the naked eye.

Ouija board.   Also known as a spirit board or talking board.  A board with letters and numbers on it.  Used as a means of communication with spirit.

Paranormal.   Unexplained.  Not normal.

Planchette.  A pointer, can be used on a Ouija board to point to letters and numbers.  Can also be a used with a pen in it to enable spirit to write or draw.

Poltergeist.   A noisy ghost.  Usually associated with banging, moving objects and throwing objects.

Possession.  When a human is taken over by a spirit that then exerts is own will without the permission of the host.

Precognition.  Knowing what is going to happen.

Psychic.  People who are psychic do not connect or communicate with spirit, however they can read the sitters aura.

Scrying.  Staring into an object in order to see the appearance of spirit.  This can be done with a mirror, crystal ball or sometimes flames.

Séance.  A group of people usually in a circle who’s intention is, by whatever means, to contact spirit.

Sensitive.  See medium/psychic

Smudging.  Clearing spirit from an area using incense.

Spectre.  Another word for ghost.

Spirit guide.  A spirit or guardian angel who helps the person it is linked or attached to.

Table tipping (typology).  Using a table as a way to communicate with spirit.  The spirit can move the table, knock on it or elevated it.

Telekinesis.  Movement of objects with the mind.

Telepathy.  Direct communication of minds.

Teleportation.  When an object disappears from one place and reappears in another.

Vortex.  It is believed that spirits can use a vortex to pass into the earth plane.
