Claiming to be the oldest pub in Britain, The Mill of the Black Monks was originally built by Cluniac monks as a medieval water mill (circa 1150) to serve Monk Bretton Priory farm.Later it passed into the hands of the Benedictine monks and in the 17th century the mill was taken over by the Quakers. The builders re-directed the course of the river Dearne to facilitate this building.  Records show that the building was also used as an arms house at one point.

The Mill stood empty for many years nothing more than a ruin but in recent year has been sympathetically renovated and is now a restaurant and public house retaining much of the medieval feel of the original building. To prevent further damage to the building from flooding the renovations included raising the building on a concrete float out of the silt bed.During renovations it seems that not only the foundations of the building were disturbed!

Many psychics and paranormal groups have visited the building over the years and not surprisingly the rich history of the building has manifested in many ways with many tales of ghost sightings and paranormal phenomena.

Staff report unseen hands have touching them and white shapes have floating through the walls. Small objects such as ashtrays and glasses move of their own free will, and the figure of a ghostly monk standing in the shadows has manifested itself.

On our initial investigation our mediums picked up on several spirits.A man and boy were ever present with us around the building.Unexplained moaning and whispers have been captured on recording equipment and team members seen to have welts and scratches following our visit.

This is truly a venue to send shivers up your spine… join us in the medieval building for a spine chilling night out.

There is ample parking at this venue.
